Turkmenian collective farmers receiving part of their yearly income from the profits of a farm in the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Turkmenia is now known as Turkmenistan. Soviet Union policy of collectivization consolidated land and labour meant that instead of being paid wages, the labourers were given a share of the farm's products after the state had taken its portion. Photographed in the 1930s.
