First—It provides for the use of car wheels w^itli broad treadswhich will present a greater surface for frictional resistance tobrake shoes, thus reducing the wear of brake shoes and of thewheels. Second—The beveled surface at the back of the tread of therail will prevent the wheel from crushing or wearing the pave-ment where it comes in contact with the rail head. The web ofthis rail is brought nearly central under the bearing point of thehead, which is a desirable feature where traffic is very load is then transmitted more directly to the base without.
