Wild garlic growing in woodland at the side of a bridleway in the High Weald area of rural East Sussex.

Wild garlic is a common sight in the mixed woodland of the high Weald in East Sussex. The leaves begin to emerge in March and the plant flowers in May and June. Leaves, if foraged for food, are best picked young. During the season the smell of wild garlic is common in these woodlands. They are often found growing with bluebells and together these plants make a wonderful spring woodland scene. Wild garlic is said to have medicinal properties of lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. It is considered to be an Ancient Woodland indicator Species.
