Women Conductors After Special TrainingAre Found to Be Well Qualifiedfor Car Operation Also WHILE the Societa Romana Tramways-Omnibuswas the first company in Italy to employ womenas conductors on tramway cars (see ElectricRailway Journal, Aug. 7, 1915), it is not certain thatit was the first to make use of them to operate these ve-hicles, because it was only a short time ago, and not un-til two years after their employment in the first-namedcapacity, that they made their advent as project had been regarded with hesitation becauseof the steep inclines on some of the companys routes,such as do not exist on the trunk lines of any otherItalian city. Moreover, the rolling stock, most of whichhas been in use for many years, is not furnished withair brakes, except in the case of the newer equipment,and the physical strength requisite to operate the handbrakes was thought beyond that of most women.
