Reverend Charles Pritchard (1808-1893), British astronomer. This caricature, titled 'A Star in the East 1883', shows Pritchard on his expedition to Egypt that year to investigate the absorption of light by the atmosphere, part of the work for which he received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1886. Pritchard spent 5-6 weeks at the observatory near Cairo. The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are also shown here. Pritchard, who was ordained in 1833, worked as a headmaster in London until 1862 when he retired to devote time to astronomy. He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1866-1868) and then Savilian Professor of Astronomy, University of Oxford (1870-1893).
