Modernist architecture by Adolf Loos the Muller House Prague Czech Republic Europe

The modernist Muller House, by Brno born architect Adolf Loos, is a landmark of early modernist architecture. It was designed in 1930 for wealthy building company owner, Frantisek Muller. His company pioneered the use of reinforced concrete and the house was built to showcase the product. Loos deliberately kept the inside of his houses private from the outside world. He said "The building should be dumb outside and only reveal wealth inside". Outside, the Villa Muller is distinguished by its cubic shape, flat roof, terraces, irregular windows and clean white facade. Loos did not draw plans for the inside because for him the ground and 1st floor did not exist. He saw only interconnected continual spaces and believed that spaces should be connected so that ascent and descent are unnoticeable and functional. The villa was seized by the communists in 1948. In 1989 when communism died the house was given to Muller's daughter Eva Maternova. She sold it to the city of Prague and it was restored in 1998 and became a museum in 2000.
