The Republic of Moldova declared its independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991. Each year on the same date, Independence Day is commemorated on Piata Marii Adunari Nationale, the main square of the capital city Chisinau. People from the different regions of the country wear their own traditional costumes for a festive parade with music and dances.
