The 1906 caption reads: “MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS IN PRISON.—The unfortunate Mary Stuart, Elizabeth's rival for the throne of England, may have been an evil woman. She was certainly an unfortunate one, but personally so charming that every one who saw her loved her. We see her here when the very nobles who bring her death-warrant cannot conceal their admiration for her courage and sorrow for her fate.” Mary was in prison from 1568 to her execution in 1587.
