Portrait of Peter González (1190 – 1246) He is sometimes referred to as Pedro González Telmo, Saint Telmo, or Saint Elmo He was a Castilian Dominican friar and priest, born in 1190 in Frómista, Palencia, Kingdom of Castile and Leon. He is often depicted holding a blue candle in reference to the blue light which appears on boat's masts during storms known as St Elmo's Fire. It is supposed to be sent by St Peter Gonzalez or St Elmo, as a token that the vessel is under his protection. Here he holds a flame in his hand.
