The spaces between the sides of that part of the cervix whichextends into the vagina and the vaginal walls are termed for-nices (plural of fornix), and are divided into four parts. Theanterior fornix is between the anterior wall of the cervix and theanterior vaginal wall; the posterior fornix is between the pos-terior vaginal wall and the posterior wall of the cervix; thelateral fornices are the spaces between the cervix and the vaginalwalls on either side. The cavity of the uterus (Fig. 12) is lined with mucousmembrane, and is divided into two parts,—the cavity of the bodyand the cavity of the cervix. There are three openings into the cavity of the uterus.
