South Polar Tow Job. An episode in the Byrd Expedition. The Coast Guard icebreaker NORTHWIND gives a tow line to the YANCEY. In this instance, the passage which the NORTHWIND had already broken open for the thin-hulled ships of the expedition, froze over before the YANCEY could get through. The NORTHWIND backed down and took her in tow.
