Fulgurite. Fulgurites are tubular, or more irregular, hollow lumps of a glassy substance that are found in natural quartz-rich sands or soils, where they are formed by lightning strikes. The sand melts into glass when it is briefly heated to a temperature in the range of 1,800 degrees Celsius.
