Thoughthe terms ofiered were accepted, the habit of insurrection wastoo strong to make the long continuance of tranquillity , it required the judgment and moderation, as wellas the great military capacity, of General Hoche to reduce thewest of France to anything like order. This was in exertions were made complete by the almost simul-taneous deaths of the two surviving spirits of the insurrection,Charette and Stofflet. Stofflet was taken, tried by military com-mission, and shot at Angers in February 1796. After wander-ing about in concealment for some time, Charette was taken onthe 23d of March, and shot at Nantes three days after. Withthe death of these leaders the war in La Vendee terminated ; andpeace and order were gradually restored to this long distractedcountry. 32.
