Common in southeast as an intro- duced weed. Two varieties, canescens T. & G. and hirsutissima Gray, are the more widespread western forms, on lighter soils. Leaves 1 to 4 inches long, pale-green, entire, linear, with wavy margins. Flowers H inches across, in axils of upper leaves, white but fading to pink, opening in the morning, having an objectionable odor. Capsules 4-angled, narrow, curved, about 1 inch long. Common on road- sides in light soils and on sandy land in southern areas. Opuntia polyacantha Haw. PRICKLY-PEAR.
