GHB molecule. Computer model of a molecule of the recreational drug gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB, ). The atoms (balls) are colour-coded: carbon (blue), hydrogen (white), and oxygen (red). It is more commonly found in the form of a chemical salt, combined with potassium (K-GHB) or sodium (Na-GHB). It is used as a sleep-aid, in body-building, and it is a natural component of human cells. It is also used as an intoxicant, like alcohol, but it is easy to overdose and there are dangerous side-effects. These include dizziness, nausea, unconsciousness, convulsions, and death. It has been labelled a date rape drug, and its sale and use is illegal in many countries.
