Lavenham, Suffolk, England, UK: the half-timbered upper storey of Box Cottage, on the north side of Prentice Street, leans well to the right above an overhang or jetty supported by exposed joists and oaken brackets or corbels. The house, Grade II Listed as of special architectural or historical interest, is one of many timber-framed dwellings built in the prosperous former wool and cloth town in the 1400s and 1500s. More than 300 properties in Lavenham have Listed Building status, with most of its ancient hall houses built for the wealthy merchants who helped to turn it into one of England’s richest towns in the medieval and Tudor eras. Box Cottage stands on a high brick plinth on the downward slope towards the northeast end of Prentice Street. It has fine oak mullioned windows filled with leaded lights and a three-light transom window above the studded and ribbed front door.
