Biographical.—Thomas Henry Huxley was born on the 4th of May,1825, at Ealing, ISIiddlesex, England, where he received his early educa-tion. For the rest he is indebted chiefly to the works of Carlyle andMill, to the diligent study of German literature, and to the example andcareful training of Wharton Jones, a distinguished English physiologist 5and anatomist. When quite a youth, commenced the study ofmedicine under his brother-in-law, a physician of some standing, and from1842 to 1845 continued his education at Sydenham College and at CharingCross Hospital Medical School. Being too young to take his degree in1846, he sought and obtained an appointment in connection with the Haslar 10Naval Hospital, near Portsmouth.
