St Mary's, Deerhurst, showing the Anglo-Saxon W tower (upper parts Medieval) which began as a porch attached to a simple C8th church, becoming a tower with a third-storey chapel as the monastic church expanded in the 9th & 10th centuries. The high-level door, a common feature in late Saxon churches, was probably for the displaying of relics to those outside. An C8th monastic church rebuilt & reformed after Danish raids: St Alfege was a monk here & then Abbot by 970. Re-founded as a Benedictine priory 1058.
