The high temperatures in Afghanistan force the soldiers to work at night, when the cooler temperatures allow the repaired potholes to properly set. Larger potholes such as this one are filled with mixture of sand, dirt and rocks which when water is added will harden into a concrete like substance in the 115 degree temperature of an Afghanistan summer.
