Conflicting references identify these snowshoes as having belonged either to the first Pierre Chouteau (1758-1849) or to his grandson Charles Pierre Chouteau (1819-1901). We do not know enough about the style or construction of the shoes to date the pair to either family member; the legend associating them with Charles dates them to his trip from Mackinac to St. Louis in 1832.
