As a politician, we knew him to hold to his principlesand party predilections with a tenacious grasp, yet he was evercourteous and liberal in his deportment and views towards hispolitical opponents. He thus won for himself andhis family ample wealth, and attained a position among hisfellow-men which those who have had the best advantages ourcountry affords might well envy.
