TAROT - OSWALD WIRTH DECK The second, revised and coloured Tarot deck designed by the French arcanist, Oswald Wirth. This is essentially a more decorative treatment of his earlier deck, the so-called first Tarot deck (also in the Charles Walker Collection), produced as black and white drawings, in 1889. This second Tarot deck was published both in line and colour. The present deck, reproduced here, was made for cartomantic purposes from copies of the beautiful colour plates that Wirth published in, Le Tarot des Imagiers du Moyen Age, 1927. This was not originally a deck of cards, but a series of plates, sold separately with the book in a special folder (this colour series is also in the Charles Walker Collection). These cards are among the most beautiful of all Tarot designs. This deck of 1927 has redesigned and changed (not always for the best) over the years: for example the cards were redrawn in 1966 by Tchou Editeur, in Paris, and in 1975 by US Games Systems, Inc. New York: in most cases, the subtle symbolism and quality of the 1927 deck was lost. In this set of four: Le Pendu (The Hanging Man), the unnamed Death card; La Temperance (Temperance) and Le Diable (The Devil).
