J. To protect the electrical equipment on our cars fromelectric storms has been a serious problem and one towhich we have given much time and money in experi-menting with the various protective devices as theyappeared on the market. The route of our railroadpasses through a section of northern New Jersey inwhich electric storms are particularly frequent andsevere. For a distance of 15 miles the storms in-variably pass in the direction of the railroad, and theygo from one end to the other before they have spenttheir fury. Thus we are reputed to have the worstlightning belt in this section of the country. We had adopted the recommended practice of in-stalling an arrester along the railroad every one-fifth Main Feeder to Knife Switch. Late in that year wepurchased four Westinghouse condenser arresters, typeK, which we saw advertised in the Electric RailwayJournal. We also purchased two direct-current elec-trolytic arresters for our substation, thus having ourincoming high-tension line and our outgoing feeders tocars well protected by the highly satisfactory electrolyticarresters. At the time we installed our first condenser arrestersit was late in the season and we had only two severestorms, but it happened in each storm that three ofthe cars were protected by the type K arresters andone was not. In each storm the cars not having theabove protection were crippled, in one case by ground-ing the pump governor and in the other by g
