The Puerto Rico Flag flying between palm trees on Isla Verde beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rico Flag flying between palm trees on Isla Verde beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The current Puerto Rician flag is based on the first flag “The Revolutionary Flag of Lares” that was used during the 1868 failed revolt against Spanish rule and modeled on the Cuban Flag. Spain ruled Puerto Rico from 1493 to 1898 until it ceded the island to the United States under the provisions of the 1898 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish-American War. In 1917, Puerto Rico became a territory and its people became citizens.
