Fractured nose. Fractured nose and bruising around a man's eyes four weeks after a head butt. The nasal bone is situated between the eyes and behind the bridge of the nose; most of the hard part of the nose consists of a dense connective tissue called cartilage. Heavy blows to the face can fracture the bone and displace the cartilage, causing pain and tenderness for several weeks. Treatment involves resetting the displaced bridge under anaesthetic, either before swelling starts or after it subsides. Damage to the cartilage may cause permanent disfigurement.
