Jimmy Reid, who died in 2010, was a trade union activist, orator, politician and journalist born in Govan, Glasgow. He won international recognition for leading the Upper Clyde shipbuilders 'work-in' in the early 1970s to try to stop the Conservative Government from closing down the shipyards. Bike charity Sustrans, received £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund to extend its National Cycle Network across the UK, and built a portrait bench along the new route, which features three lifesize 2D figures of local heroes Jimmy Reid, James Watt and Tom Weir.
