Blood pressure measurement. Woman checking her blood pressure at home with an electronic sphygmomanometer. A cuff is placed around her upper arm and is inflated to stop blood flow in the arm. The machine measures the pressure exerted by the heart as it contracts (systolic) and the pressure exerted as it relaxes (diastolic). The readings are displayed on a digital screen and show a normal blood pressure.
