The period green uniform was designed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Spanish King Charles V, (1516-1556) and his son Philip (Filipe)11 at the time. Las Caballerizas Reales de Cordoba (The Royal Stables of Cordoba) located next door to the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos (Castle of the Christian Monarchs) was founded by Felipe II, the Spanish King on whose empire the sun never set, in 1572. Felipe II had a deep passion to breed sturdy Andalusian horses for the service of the Royal House". The stables is now recognised as the birthplace of the purebred Andalusian horse. In 1929, the stables were listed as a National Historical Monument and became part of the National Heritage. Several nights a week, the ‘Spirit of the Andalusian Horse’ equestrian show with its riders performing a variety of horsemanship skills such as dressage, musical dance, horse leaps, and a dance with a traditional flamenco dancer in the open paddock. Also, the skilful use and handling of a ‘garrocha’, a three-metre long wooden pole originated for use in rounding up cattle herds on Andalusian farms in Spain in the 17th century.
