Visitors look down from lookout tower that rises above the Northern Palace at Masada, ancient Jewish fortress in Israel

Visitors look down from the top of Masada, a site of ancient palaces and fortifications in the Southern District of Israel, on top of an isolated rock plateau on the eastern edge of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea. Masada is best known for the violence that occurred there in the first century CE. The Siege of Masada by troops of the Roman Empire led to the mass suicide of the Sicarii rebels including women and children. The site today is a museum with cable car leading from a modern gift shop to the plateau top where visitors can see ruins of the ancient living quarters, wells and preserved wall murals.
