The seven great monarchies of the ancient eastern world: or, The history, geography and antiquities of Chaldæa, Assyria, Babylon, Media, Persia, Parthia, and Sassanian or New Persian empire . probable ^^^—at any rate solong a period had elapsed since the latest of them, that in thereigns of Asshur-pani-pal and Cyaxares they were wholly for-gotten and the South reposed in happy unconsciousness of adanger which might at any time have burst upon it, had theProvidence which governs the world so willed. The Asiaticsteppes had long teemed with a nomadic population, of a Avar-like temper, and but slightly attached to its homes, whichignorance of its own strength and of the weakness and wealthof its neighbors had alone prevented from troubling the greatempires of the South. Geographic difficulties had at onceprolonged the period of ignorance, and acted as obstructions,if ever the idea arose of pushing exploring parties into thesouthern regions; the Caucasus, the Caspian, the sandy desertsof Khiva and Kharesm, and the great central Asiatic moun-tain-chains, forming barriers which naturally restrained thenorthern hordes from progressing in this direction.
