NERVE FIBERS, TEM

A small bundle of non-myelinated nerve fibers (without a myelin sheath). These very small fibers ( to nanometers) (in red) are surrounded by Schwann cells (green). This type of nerve fiber conducts nerve influx much slower than myelinated fibers coated with a myelin sheath. Non-myelinated fibers belong to the sympathetic nervous system devoted to involuntary movement which controls, for example, the diameter of blood vessels. Collagen fibers are disposed around the Schwann cells and nerve fibers. SEM, colored, x 64 000
