After the eggs are laid—an operation which takes ten or twelve days—the parent leaves them, and rests quietly for a time to recover strength. In due time the eggs hatch. At first the little fish is not at all like its parents, having no scales, and being quite transparent. For some time it does not eat, its mouth not being properly.
