The landing-net andgaff have already been defined (see Angling)in the present work ; and it remains only toadd an alternative, for which the writer is in-debted to Mr. James Railton, of Teignmouth, and which is very serviceable on rocks or Fig. S.—L.\NDi.\G-HooK. where neither net nor gaff could be used, theangler being at too great a height above thewater. The figure explains itself, the apparatusconsisting merely of a wide brass tube filledwith lead, having a strong brass ring at the oneend, to which is attached a stout cord, andthree large galvanised hooks at the use consists practically in getting it underthe fish hooked and foul-hooking it. Theobjection is that, if missed, the fish might bebadly wounded, and, in any case, this means oflanding the fish should not be used unless themore usual and legitimate gaff or net are abso-lutely /tors de combat, and the fish thoroughlyplayed out. It would, in fact, be the very thingfor Australian rock-fishing. Yet another article of great use in keepingsand-eels and other bait alive is the courge,a torpedo-shaped basket into which the baits
