Theincreased use of electrical transmission is graduallycrowding out this latter form of rope driving. For comparatively short distancesof from 100 to 500 yards wire rope stilloffers a cheap and simple means ofcarrying power. The pulleys or wheels are entirelydifferent from those used with manilaropes. Fig. 84 shows a section of the rimof such a pulley. The rope does nottouch the sides of the groove butrests on a shallow depression in awooden, leather or rubber filling at the bottom. Thehigh side flanges prevent the rope from leaving thepulley when swaying on account of the high speed. The pulleys must be large, usually about 100 times13. The ropes should not be less than 200feet long unless some form of tightening pulley is used.—Table XXXIV. is taken from Eoebling. Long ropes should be supported by idle pulleys every400 feet.
