In the second half of the 19th century Eastbourne changed dramatically. In 1849 the railway arrived, making it more accessible for visitors. The town's growth was accelerated by two major landowners, the Duke of Devonshire and John Davies Gilbert. Both built many new houses and the population boomed. By 1871 Eastbourne had a population of over 10,000. The pier was built in 1872 and Devonshire Park opened in the early 1870s. The Winter Gardens, a glazed, cast iron structure, was constructed between 1874 and 1876 by Henry Currey, architect to the Devonshire Estate and the seventh Duke of Devonshire. Taken from a small image in a Victorian photograph album, this will not reproduce well at too large a size.
