For general crop use a rich, deep loam or inclining to clay is best. When grown in garden sow in double rows 6 to 8 inches apart; the rows 2 to 4 feet apart. Commence sowing the extra early varieties as early as the ground can be worked in February or March; transplant for a succession every two weeks until June, then discontinue until the middle of August, when a good crop may be secured by sowing extra early and early sorts for fall use. They should be kept clean and earthed up twice during the growth. The wrinkled varieties are not as hardy as the small, round sort and if planted early should have a dry soil or they are liable to rot in the ground. They are, however, the sweetest and best flavored varieties. The dwarf varieties are best suited for small gardens. Extra Early Dwarf Varieties. 554. Bolgiano's "Early Bird" Peas. («'Best in Gar- den" Variety.) (50 days.) This wonderful semi-wrinkled dwarf variety can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked. They do not rot in the ground like fully wrinkled peas. The dwarf vigorous vines measure 18 inches and carry enormous crops of large, beautiful, deep green pods, 4 to 5 inches long, and are filled with 9 to 10 large blue marrow peas of fine flavor, Bolgiano's "Early Bird" Pea is a profitable variety for the market gardener.
