Staphyloma of the eye, illustration. This abnormal growth is often congenital (present from birth). It may occur on the cornea, the transparent front part of the eye, as here, or the sclera, the white of the eye. It may cause impairment of vision and increased intra-ocular pressure. Surgery can correct the disorder. From New Dictionary of Practical Medicine and Surgery by Dr Jaccoud Vol. 9 (1869).
