On June 29, 1876, he wasmarried to Victoria Celle, and there are two chil-dren : Roger Sylvester (A. B. 1900, M. 1). 1902),now of Johns Hopkins University, and EthelCelle. (For portrait, see page 60.) GEORGE EDWARD FROTHINGHAM was born in Boston, Massachusetts, April 23, 1836,son of Bradbury and Eliza (Frothingham) Frothing-ham. His ancestors were English. He was edu-. GEORGE EDWARD FROTHINGHAM cated at Phillips-Andover Academy, and began hisactive life as a teacher. Afterwards he was attractedto the study of medicine and placed himself underthe tuition of the eminent New England physicianand surgeon, William Warren Greene. In 1864 hewas graduated from the Department of Medicineand Surgery of the University of Michigan. Hereturned to New England, and entered upon thepractice of his profession at North Becket, Massa-chusetts. Three years later, when his former pre-ceptor, Dr. Greene, was called to the chair ofSurgery at the University of Michigan, he accom-panied him as Prosector of Surgery and Demonstra-tor of Anatomy. He paid especial attention to thediseases of the eye and ear; and when in 1870 thechair of Ophthalmology and Aural Surgery was 246 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN established in the University, he became its firstoccupant.
