Aged 20, he was a baker's assistant in civil life, Flight Sergeant Simpson was rear gunner of an aircraft engaged in the operations at Arnhem. When nearing its objective, the aircraft was hit by flak, burst into flames and force landed. All members of the crew, with the except ion of the bomb aimer and the flight engineer, got clear of the blazing aircraft. Disregarding exploding ammunition, the danger of the petrol tanks exploding, and under continuous fire from nearby Germans, Flight Sergeant Simpson twice entered the machine, rescueing the two trapped men and bringing them to safety just 30 seconds before the petrol tanks exploded and destroyed the aircraft immediately.
