Piddington Wood, neglected broadleaf mixed woodland being brought back into production by the Woodland Trust. Oxfordshire. Detail of freshly woven hazel hurdle fencing panel. Uprights are called sails, horizontal rods are called weavers. Young, straight hazel rods are cut from the plant stool and split in half length ways. Generally the split rods are used in the body of the panel, and rounds are used for the top and bottom layers.
