A Chinese Army soldier speaks with a Chinese street vendor below the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Construction of the Potala Palace was started in 1647 by the 5th Dalai Lama. It has over 1,000 rooms and was the seat of the Tibetan government until the 1959 Chinese Army invasion when the 14th and current Dalai Lama fled to India as an exile. In 1994, UNESCO placed the Potala Palace on its World Heritage site list. China has encouraged ethnic Han Chinese to migrate to the Autonomous Region of Tibet to shift people from the overpopulated areas of the mainland to resettle.
