He was a mem-ber of the lower house of the Indiana State Legislature about 1870. being aDemocrat in his political world. His widow, who is now seventy-eight yearsof age, makes her home with the subject of this sketch. He was one of fourchildren, the other three dying in childhood. The subject of this sketch received his elementary education in the publicschools of Oakland City. His father was engaged in the drug business in thiscity and for a while young McGowan was employed in this store, thus gaining. DR. J. W. Doctor McGowan be-gan active practice of his profession in [878 at Eureka, Spencer county, Indi-ana, but six months later came to Oakland City where he has been engagedcontinuously in the practice since, with the exception of the year-- [889 and10, when he was surgeon of the Montana Territory prison at Deer Lodge,.Montana.
