Night view along North Promenade towards illuminated Rocket Tram at Gynn Roundabout, Blackpool Illuminations, 2013

To celebrate the centenary of Blackpool Illuminations in 2012, Blackpool Illuminations Department refurbished the Rocket Tram. This tram, last in service in 1999, was built in 1961 on a standard tram chassis, with the passenger compartment angled up, as if the 'Rocket' was climbing in altitude. The tram, not illuminated because of the age of the cabling, last ran on the tracks in 2002. Because of current health and safety concerns, passengers will never be allowed to travel on the tram again. One issue is the build-up of heat in the driving compartment. In 2013 the refurbished Rocket Tram, surrounded by illuminated astronauts, was seen as a static display at the Gynn Square Roundabout. A view towards the tram from the North Promenade.
