La Nina is the cool phase of the El Nino/La Nina-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) that occurs across the tropical Pacific Ocean roughly every five years. The ENSO affects weather systems across the world, bringing extreme weather such as floods and droughts. The effects vary between summer and winter. This illustration shows winter effects, with areas of dry weather (brown), wet weather (green), cool weather (dark blue), wet and cool weather (light blue), dry and warm weather (yellow), and dry and cool weather (light pink). For the summer effects, see image C026/8986. For the El Nino effects in summer and winter, see images C026/8984 and C026/8985.
