A view through one of the tunnels at the High Angle Battery, Portland, showing the date of construction above the arch, 1892

The Verne High Angle Battery was built in a quarry on the top of the Isle of Portland on the south coast of England in 1892. It was built as part of a range of defensive measures against a perceived threat of invasion from France. The guns, hidden behind the embankment were fired high into the air (hence high angle) to land on the decks of hostile ships. During World War 2 Ack-ack guns were installed and the site was used as storage in preparation for D-Day.
