Inside the Todaiji Temple in Nara, Japan, sits the 15-meter tall bronze statue of Daibutsu (statue on the right-hand side of the photograph) or Big Buddha. The statue represents Vairocana, the cosmic Buddha of Universal Light, and is flanked by two bodhisattvas, one of which appears on the left-hand side of the photograph. A bodhisattva is usually referred to as someone who, motivated by great compassion, has a spontaneous wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.
