In a par-tially consolidated aneurysm pulsation may be slight or even protrusion instantly ceases to pulsate and almost disappears on makingfirm pressure on the artery above. On relaxing the pressure the pulsatileenlargement at once reappears. Direct pressure upon the tumor may cause 478 Diseases and Injuries of the Heart and Vessels it to almost disappear. Pressure upon the artery below causes the tumorto enlarge. The pulsation is expansile—that is, the sac expands in all direc-tions during every cardiac contraction—and if an index-finger be laid on eachside of the tumor so that the points nearly touch, each pulsation not only Uftsthe fingers, but it also separates them. It is important to remember that alarge intrathoracic aneurysm which is in contact with the chest may not exhibitexpansile pulsation, but simply transmit pulsation from the blood-
