TREDEGAR, WALES, UNITED KINGDOM. Image of The Independent Minister and Journalist Evan Jones, 'Ieuan Gwynedd' (1820-1852) statue in Tredegar. During his short stay at Tredegar he developed Sunday school classes and took a keen interest in education. Often this was the only education children working in the mines and ironworks received. The Homfray Heritage Trail, named after Samuel Homfrey (1762-1822) who was responsible, with others, for the establishment of the Tredegar Ironworks, was established by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council as part of the Green Mines/Atlanterra project back in 2013. The six mile trail starts at Bedwellty House which was built by Samuel Homfrey’s son, Samuel jnr., who was also responsible for many of the features that can be seen today in the surrounding park. The trail markers featured along the Homfrey Trail were commissioned to encourage the community and visitors to Bedwellty Park to use and enjoy the trail, and to give them a better understanding of the cultural and industrial heritage of Tredegar. The inscriptions on the statues are bilingual along with QR codes for more accessible information. Made from laser-cut stainless steel by artist Tim Ward, famous figures such as Aneurin Bevan are joined by lesser-known individuals along the trail who put Tredegar on the map. These include names such as Nora Childs, last secretary of the Tredegar Medical Aid Society who died in 2011, John Jones, hewer of the world record block of coal now located in Bedwellty Park, and Thomas Ellis, chief engineer of Tredegar Iron Company. When speaking on his work for the trail, artist Tim Ward said, ‘I found the project both enjoyable and a learning experience. Exploring Tredegar's rich social and political history was absorbing and understanding how this impacted on the whole of the UK was fascinating.’ The Homfray trail is one of seven ‘In the footsteps of the Ironmakers’ trails that explores the industrial heritage of the area.
