Viking-age buildings E of the early C12th Romanesque church on the tidal island of Brough of Birsay, off Mainland, Orkney.
Viking-age buildings E of the early C12th Romanesque church on the tidal island of the Brough of Birsay, Orkney. The Brough, at the NW of Mainland, was an important centre (both secular & ecclesiastical) for the Picts & later Norse settlers. The church remained a place of pilgrimage into the Middle Ages because the body of St Magnus (d 1116) was thought to have rested there before removal to Birsay & then Kirkwall.
