Nerve cell growth. Laser scanning micrograph of nerve cells (neurons) with fluorescent staining. These cells have been grown in culture. The stains show nerve cell bodies (pink) and the neurites (yellow, either axons or dendrites) that connect the cell bodies to form a network. Neurons transmit electrical nerve signals around the body. These neurons have been grown from NT2 cells, a human teratocarcinoma (cancer) cell line, capable of differentiation into nerve cells. Research like this may lead to methods of neural regeneration that could treat spinal paralysis and other nerve disorders. Magnification: x300 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
